My first guest today is ‘No Impact Man’, Colin Beavan, just walked up 24 flights of stairs to avoid consuming electricity in the elevator.

It’s a one-year experiment. And it’s extreme. No soda can, no water in plastic bottle, don’t buy new product, canceling magazines and news paper subscriptions, no throw-away plastic razors, no airplanes or subways or taxies, no elevators. Is it possible to have a good life without wasting so much?

The Times makes it sounds like, why change the world, why gimmick for your next book, do you cut to that?

What if we called it the year I lost 20 pounds without going to the gym once? Or the year we didn’t watch TV and became much better parents as a result? Or if we called it the year we ate locally and seasonally and it ended up reversing my wife’s pre-diabetic condition?

NO IMPACT MAN ドキュメンタリー

Colin Beavan decides to completely eliminate his personal impact on the environment for the next year. It means eating vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refrigerator. It also means no elevators, no television, no cars, busses, or airplanes, no toxic cleaning products, no electricity, no material consumption, and no garbage.

No problem – at least for Colin – but he and his family live in Manhattan. So when his espresso-guzzling, retail-worshipping wife Michelle and their two-year-old daughter are dragged into the fray, the No Impact Project has an unforeseen impact of its own.

Colin did it for a year, now it’s your turn! The No Impact Project (the new No Impact Man not-for-profit) is challenging you to try and live no impact for one week. We’ll put you on a team and guide you through the steps day-by-day. We guarantee you’ll discover for yourself that less IS more.

Amy Courtney: Freewheelin Farm, Davenport CA
I’m doing the best that I can to live honestly. I’m not relying on some strange economic structure that have been set up that benefit some and hurt others to make my livelihood. I think that makes me feel just a little bit safer while the world gone mad. Come here..Daffy, you are to be in the movie..

Brock Fulmer: Bay Area Meat CSA, Berkeley CA
It sort of a game and the ball, I start doing it and it start rolling it, and it’s like, wow, I can actually doing something morally done and still pay the mortgage, you know. That hadn’t happened to me in a sort of obvious way in the past. But it’s so clear that absolutely nothing wrong with it, everything is right.

John Brenner & Stacey Bliss: Broadturn Farm, Scarborough Maine
When we first shut up and cover up, we have absolutely no idea what we were doing. We took every book out of public library to find on growing plants and vegetables and farming. I never set my foot on working farms, maybe once before that. Sorry, we were pretty green.

Chris Velez: Intermountain Nursery, Prather CA
My dad was raised in Central Valley, and when they were young they worked a lot in the great fields. So for dad to kind of hear that his son wants to go back and be a dirt farmer was.. you know, he was totally supportive but I think he wants to see me being an insurance salesman.

Severine von Tscharner Fleming: Director
We are making a film about young farmers, their struggle and their valor. The redemptive force that they have, for our society, For our culture, for our agriculture, for our countryside, for our nation.

Ned Conwell: Blue House Farm, Pescadero CA
This land belongs to Peninsula Open Space Trust, which is a non-profit land trust along the coast side. They lease us 4 acres which we steward for them and grow excellent produce. Our ability, knowledge, understanding of this place, is growing every year every moment, every season is different.

Pilar Reber: Sunnyside Organic Nursery, N. Richmond CA
They are coming in! Wow, it’s wonderful in here.
In conventional act, we’d have a huge machine doing this for us, which is about $30,000. But this works. There’s a low mobile thing I like it there.

Brooke Budner: Urban Gardener, San Francisco CA
The way this garden got started is, I was up on my roof, and I could see this beautiful part of green space. So for about a month I stalked about this building. Finally I found someone coming out of the building and got the name of landlord and phone number, and I called him. And I asked if I could use the space. He asked “Do you wanna use a part of it? You want to use all of it?” “All of it” So he said “OK” and he gave me a code to garage before even met me.

I mean, gosh, what a gorgeous place. 70,000 acres of wildness. And the fort just created. Let’s take a look.

The Greenhorns – A documentary film about young farmers

“Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independent, the most virtuous and they are tied to their country and wedded to it’s liberty and interests by the most lasting bands” – Thomas Jefferson

The Greenhorns is a documentary film that explores the lives of America’s young farming community – its spirit, practices, and needs. As the nation experiences a groundswell of interest in sustainable lifestyles, we see the promising beginnings of an agricultural revival. Young farmers’ efforts feed us safe food, conserve valuable land, and reconstitute communities split apart by strip malls. It is the filmmakers’s hope that by broadcasting the stories and voices of these young farmers, we can build the case for those considering a career in agriculture – to embolden them, to entice them, and to recruit them into farming.

Our mission, as a small grass-roots nonprofit based in the Hudson Valley of New York, is to support, promote and recruit young farmers in America.
