My dad was raised in Central Valley, and when they were young they worked a lot in the great fields. So for dad to kind of hear that his son wants to go back and be a dirt farmer was.. you know, he was totally supportive but I think he wants to see me being an insurance salesman.

The way this garden got started is, I was up on my roof, and I could see this beautiful part of green space. So for about a month I stalked about this building. Finally I found someone coming out of the building and got the name of landlord and phone number, and I called him. And I asked if I could use the space. He asked “Do you wanna use a part of it? You want to use all of it?” “All of it” So he said “OK” and he gave me a code to garage before even met me.
この庭の始まりは.. ある日家の屋根に上って周りを眺めたら、この奇麗な緑の空き地が見えたんです。それから一ヶ月位、この家をずっと監視して、とうとう住人に会えました。その人から大家さんの名前と電話番号を聞いて、電話して聞いたんです。この場所を使ってもいいかって。大家さんは「一部を使いたいの？それとも全部？」私は言いました「全部」。大家さんは快く承諾してくれて、空き地に通じるガレージを開けるコードを教えてくれたんです。まだ会ったこともない私に。

The Greenhorns is a documentary film that explores the lives of America’s young farming community – its spirit, practices, and needs. As the nation experiences a groundswell of interest in sustainable lifestyles, we see the promising beginnings of an agricultural revival. Young farmers’ efforts feed us safe food, conserve valuable land, and reconstitute communities split apart by strip malls. It is the filmmakers’s hope that by broadcasting the stories and voices of these young farmers, we can build the case for those considering a career in agriculture – to embolden them, to entice them, and to recruit them into farming.

Our mission, as a small grass-roots nonprofit based in the Hudson Valley of New York, is to support, promote and recruit young farmers in America.
