This was not an easy film to make. At first I have to thank Cleve Jones, Anne Kronenberg and all the real life people who shared the story with me. And Gus Van Sant and Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, James Franco and our entire cast, my producers Dan Jinks, Bruce Cohen and everyone on the ground of Focus, for taking on a challenge on telling this life saving story.

When I was thirteen years old, my beautiful mother and father moved me from conservative Mormon home in San Antonio TX to California. And I heard the story of Harvey Milk. And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life, it gave me the hope to one day I can live my life openly as who I am, and maybe even I could fall in love, and one day get married.
僕が13才の時、美しい僕の母と父は、テキサス州サンアントニオの保守的なモルモン教の家庭から、僕を連れ出してくれました。そして僕はハーヴィー・ミルクのことを知ったのです。そして希望をもらいました。自分の人生を生きる希望、僕が僕としてありのままに生きて行ける人生への希望、そしていつか愛する人と巡り会い結婚できるという希望。
I wanna thank my mom, who’s always loved me for who I am even when there was pressure not to. But most of all, if Harvey had not be taken from us 30 years ago, I think he want me to say, to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told who are less by their churches, by the government, or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of the value. And no matter anyone tells you God loves you, and very soon I promise you will have equal rights, federally across this nation of ours.
母に感謝します。母はいつも僕を愛してくれた、周囲の偏見の中でもずっと変わらずに。もしハーヴィーが30年前に僕たちの元から離れなかったら、きっと今日こう言うでしょう。「すべてのゲイ・レズビアンである子供たち若者たち、教会や政府や家族たちから『劣等』と言われて来た君たちへ。君たちは美しい、そして価値のある素晴らしい人間だ。誰がなんと言おうと、神は君たちを愛している。そしてもうすぐ、君たちに平等な人権が与えられる。僕たちの国の西から東まで、政府による正当な人権が。僕は約束する」

I believe it was right after he was elected, he says “Somewhere out there, there’s a kid in San Antonio TX”, which is where I’m from, “who’s gonna hear that a gay man was elected in the public office, and it’s gonna give him hope” and I just went losing it, broke down and cry, because I was very much that kid growing up.
あれは彼が当選してすぐのスピーチだったと思います。「テキサス州サンアントニオのどこかに少年がいる」僕の出身地です「その少年がある日、同性愛者が政府の役職に当選したことを知る。それはその少年に希望を与える。」それを聞いて僕は、感動に我を忘れて、泣き崩れてしまいました。だって、僕はまさにその「少年」だったから。
And to hear like him, someone like that saying that “Hey, not only you are OK, but you can do great things. Look at me, I’m sitting at the top of the car and I’m elected to the public office, and there’s nothing that can stop me.” That’s probably the moment that I thought that, you know, we got to get the story back there to continue this message.
彼は言っていた「君はちゃんとした普通の人間というだけじゃない。素晴らしいことが成し遂げられるんだ。僕を見てごらん。政府の役職に選ばれて、オープンカーの上で手を振っているんだよ。僕を止められるものはなにもないんだ」その瞬間、僕の心は決まっていました。彼のメッセージを伝え続けるために、彼の物語をもう一度作らなければ‥と。
