Somewhere in Des Moines or San Antonio there is a young gay person who all the sudden realizes that he or she is gay; knows that if their parents find out they will be tossed out of the house, their classmates will taunt the child, and the Anita Bryant’s and John Briggs’ are doing their part on TV. And that child has several options: staying in the closet, and suicide.
アイオワ州デスモインス、もしくはテキサス州アントニオのどこかで、一人の少年が突然自分が同性愛者であることに気づいたとしよう。もし両親が知ったら家を追い出される、クラスメートが知ったらひどい目に合う。歌手のアニタ・ブライアントと政治家のジョン・フリッグスは、反ゲイ運動をテレビで大展開しているし。少年に残された選択肢は、クローゼットに隠れる（ゲイであることを隠す）、もしくは自殺。
And then one day that child might open the paper that says “Homosexual elected in San Francisco” and there are two new options: the option is to go to California, or stay in San Antonio and fight.
そんなある日、その少年が新聞を開くと、目に飛び込んでくるヘッドライン「サンフランシスコは同性愛者を市会議員に選出！」少年には新たな選択肢ができた。カリフォルニアへ行く、もしくはサンアントニオに留まって闘う。
Two days after I was elected I got a phone call and the voice was quite young. It was from Altoona, Pennsylvania. And the person said “Thanks”. And you’ve got to elect gay people, so that thousand upon thousands like that child know that there is hope for a better world; there is hope for a better tomorrow.
私が市会議員に当選した二日後、電話がかかってきた。とても若い青年の声だった。ペンシルバニア州アルトゥーナからかけていると言った。若い青年の声は私に言った「ありがとう」。もっともっと同性愛者を選出しなければだめだ。そうすれば何千何万もの彼の様な少年少女青年たちに、彼らの未来に希望があることを知らせることが出来る。もっと人間らしい明日への希望があることを知らせることが出来る。
Without hope, not only gays, but those who are blacks, the Asians, the disabled, the seniors, the us’s: without hope the us’s give up. I know that you can’t live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. And you, and you, and you, and you have got to give them hope.

Harvey Milk was the first openly-gay man to be elected to public office in the US in 1977. His most recognized speech, “You Cannot Live On Hope Alone,” was given in 1978, shortly before he was assassinated. His words resonate particularly today as Californians debate a resolution to ban gay marriage.
ハーヴェイ・ミルクは1977年米国で初めて、自分が同性愛者であることを公にしながら政府の役職に選出された。彼の最も有名なスピーチ「You Cannot Live On Hope Alone/希望だけでは生きて行けない」は、1978年に彼が暗殺される少し前に行われた。カリフォルニアで同性愛者結婚を廃止するかどうかの論争が行われる今日、ミルクの声は今までになく強く響き渡る。
