Last week, I sat a few feet away as Barack Obama was sworn in as our new president. It was an amazing and wonderful feeling to see the history being made, and to feel the passion and hope of millions, literary stretching more than a mile in the mall.
Our new president called us to actions and service, and I know we all take that very seriously. The truth is we’ve never been closer to real progress on the issue we care so much about. But it’s up to us to turn hope into action.
I was there in 1993 when we had our ground full of support in our inauguration for major change. But too much of that was blocked by powerful special interests.
This time can be different. But only if we decide to make it different. So it’s time to get real. Right now our new leaders and congress are debating in the economic recovery plan that will invest in alternative and renewable energy, help end our addiction to foreign oil and dirty coal, begin to address the climate crisis and create millions new jobs in the process. It’s a crucial down payment on our Repower America agenda.
But it’s passage is in no way of certainty. Because the big oil and coal lobbies will fight tooth and nail against change. Just they have in the past.
This time, though, we can stop them. We have to act now. The next few weeks are critical. We have real opportunities right now that we may never have again. If we are able to seize these opportunities, we will set in motion the exciting incentives that we’ll create high paying new jobs, give us new renewable energy sources, and provide long overdue solutions to the climate crises.
That’s why days and weeks ahead, I’m going to be calling on you to take further action to help make our goal of a 100% clean electricity in 10 years a reality. It’s a bold goal, but the one is very much attainable. And with your support, I have no doubt that together we can repower America.
