It all began with the story. After being in jail for 27 years based primarily on his political beliefs, Nelson Mandela became the first democratically elected president in South Africa. I had the honor of playing Nelson Mandela in the new film “Invictus”. And believe the powerful story like this inspire millions of people. We all accept that it is only through the effort of dedicated people coming together that human rights will continued to be protected.

YouTube can be a powerful tool championing the rights of individuals and promoting free expression. This month, during International Human Rights Day, YouTube is partnering with Morgan Freeman and Amnesty International to encourage you to become advocates for equality and justice, through Video Volunteers.

Time Capsule being built in Copenhagen creates a future thinking perspective on today’s climate change debate and it could include your message!
Produced by the Emmy® Award winning production company Xenophile Media in Toronto, Love Letters to the Future is a project designed to raise awareness about climate change.
Imagine what generations in the future will think of us if we don’t do anything about climate change. And then try to imagine that future differently. What would you say to a generation 100 years from now?
The project is collecting video love letters to the future from the public, and is also collecting filmed statements from indigenous people in the Cook Islands and places that are among those most effected by climate change.
A time capsule being built in Copenhagen will preserve the 100 best messages uploaded to www.loveletterstothefuture.com, as voted on by the public. It will be sealed in mid-December, to be re-opened in the next century. To ensure our love letters are still around 100 years from today, they will be stored using Monolith™ cards, a technology incorporating analog and digital data pioneered by the Imaging and Media Lab at the University of Basel.
The project’s goal is to collect a critical mass of love letters and present them to the world at a live event during the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in mid-December. Throughout the event, a selection of the time-capsule messages will be projected on a huge screen and read out by a (soon-to-be-revealed!) celebrity.

Change will not happen unless the people demand it. That’s why Hopenhagen exists – to give you a rallying cry and the tools to demand a positive outcome in Copenhagen. Signing the UN Climate Petition is only the first step. We need your help activating Hopenhagen in your communities, so the movement grows. This needs to be a people’s movement, with enough people involved that our leaders can’t ignore it.
Our hope is that in Copenhagen we can begin to build a cleaner, more livable world than the one we live in today. And this hope is more than just wishful thinking. We’re already seeing examples of how this is possible, all around the planet.
33 months ago, on the steps of old capital in Springfield Illinois, our movement for change began. And weeks and months that followed, in the living rooms and backyards all across America, millions of you lent your voices to the movement. You volunteered. Some of you for the very first time, others for the first time in a long time. You became neighborhood team leaders, precinct captains and caucus captains. You knocked on doors, dug into your savings and talked to anyone who listened. And step by step, block by block, you’ve created the greatest grassroots campaign ever assembled.
Because of you, we stood together one year ago today, and helped to bend the arc of history. As I said on that night, victory alone was not the change we sought. It was only the chance for us to make that change. You understood the enormity of the test that lay ahead, and you knew the challenges that we face might not met in one year or one term.
That’s why you decided to keep the movement going. You’ve created “Organizing for America” to build on the strength of campaign and keep the call for change alive in every corner of our nation. And today that movement is strong as ever. Over 2-million of you have taken an action in support of “Organizing for America”’s health care campaign. And you recently generated 315000 calls to congress in a single day. Each of you is making difference in your way. That’s why I want to thank you. Colin Beavan decides to completely eliminate his personal impact on the environment for the next year. It means eating vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refrigerator. It also means no elevators, no television, no cars, busses, or airplanes, no toxic cleaning products, no electricity, no material consumption, and no garbage.

In 1998, I had an idea to create a day of peace, a day of seize fire and non-violence, a day when fighting stops allowing humanitarian and assistants to those in need, a day for everyone to unite.
I can hear cynics voices getting lauder. Day will never work, nobody will stop. But I couldn’t walk away. I believed in a day. I had to make it famous.
Individuals came forward. One in particular was willing to become seriously involved. Together we had to prove the day will have practical affect on people’s lives. Where? Afghanistan. The one place on earth where there haven’t been peace for 30 years. What happen next is beyond my wildest dreams..

And the Obama administration has announced plans to posthumously award the gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian honor. Milk was assassinated in 1978 after an outspoken career as one of the nations first openly gay elected officials.

Our food is harvested by millions of people working in dangerous conditions with no benefits and no health coverage. These people labor for long days through hot summers, it can reach a 120 degrees. Farm worker communities are exposed to harmful pesticides, pesticide like methyl iodide. Last summer 16-year old María Jiménez worked under the blazing sun without clean water or shade. She overheated and died picking food for us. 15 farm workers have died of heat related illnesses in 2004.

He said “I was gonna inquire, cause you come and go and he would receive you this time”. I said “Well if it’s possible I’d be delighted, but don’t go through any difficulties”. Alright, he said, and he went off.

He can’t be this small, my god!” And I was deeply moved by the humanity, his presence was so overwhelming.

Three of us boys from California wound up in Northern Uganda. We saw the incredible horror and encountered heart breaking suffering, especially among the children who sleep on the streets for fear of abduction.

We first told our stories of experience in Northern Uganda in a documentary called “Invisible Children”. It explains our discovery of the longest of any wars in Africa, and night commuters flee from the rebel leader Joseph Kony. Because of this war of madness, people are living with no jobs and children can’t go to school.
僕らは北ウガンダでの経験を「見えない子供たち」と題したドキュメンタリー映画にした。アフリカで最も長い戦争と、抵抗軍指導者ジョセフ・コニーの誘拐から逃れるために夜間市街へ移動する子供たち「ナイトコミューター」を記録した。この狂気の戦争のために、人々には仕事がなく、子供たちは学校に行けない。
To restore hope in war-torn area, we created microeconomic bracelet program. This campaign give the name and the face of the children affected by the war. The proceeds from the bracelets will go back to Uganda to provide children with mentors and put them into schools.

We then recruited other youth to spend a several months on an adventurous road trip on RVs, showing this documentary across the United States in a national tour. Over 2000000 people saw the film, many were moved to act.

I trust Governor Schwarzenegger is an increasingly reasonable man. And that he understands that passing on prejudices, as surround this issue as so many others is poisonous to future generations. Declaring Harvey Milk day, in that I believe, will happen with this support. It’s the kind of things I can speak first hand to.
There’re current issues related to Prop 8, we’ve talked about those issues today. But also current needs for volunteerism and activism in this day in this country and the world.
Harvey Milk, in my own experience of researching the project and learning about him in the way in which a day like this will encourage children in schools around the state to do, wakes up that interest in activism and volunteerism in every way imaginable.
For that reason, it’s not just important but essential with such a heroic and seminal figure as Harvey Milk that we honor him in this way, that we honor the children in generations to come in spreading this kind of understanding and excitement about their participation in our system.

With an occupying army waging war in Iraq and Afghanistan, with military bases and corporate bullying in every part of the world, there is hardly a question any more of the existence of an American Empire. Indeed, the once fervent denials have turned into a boastful, unashamed embrace of the idea.

However the very notion that the United States was an empire did not occur to me until after I finished my work as a bombardier with the Eighth Air Force in the Second World War. Even as I began to have second thoughts about the purity of the “Good War,” even after being horrified by Hiroshima and Nagasaki, even after rethinking my own bombing of towns in Europe, I still did not put all that together in the context of an American “Empire.”

I was conscious, like everyone, of the British Empire and the other imperial powers of Europe, but the United States was not seen in the same way. When, after the war, I went to college under the G.I. Bill of Rights and took courses in U.S. history, I usually found a chapter in the history texts called “The Age of Imperialism.” It seemed that American imperialism lasted only a relatively few years.

I recall the classroom map (labeled “Western Expansion”) which presented the march across the continent as a natural, almost biological phenomenon. That huge acquisition of land called “The Louisiana Purchase” gave no hint of anything but vacant land acquired. No sense that this territory had been occupied by hundreds of Indian tribes which would have to be annihilated or forced from their homes — what we now call “ethnic cleansing”.

That classroom map also had a section to the south and west labeled “Mexican Cession.” This was a handy euphemism for the aggressive war against Mexico in 1846 in which the United States seized half of that country’s land. The term “Manifest Destiny,” used at that time, soon of course became more universal.

The violent march across the continent, and even the invasion of Cuba, appeared to be within a natural sphere of U.S. interest. But with hardly a pause after Cuba came the invasion of the Philippines, halfway around the world. The word “imperialism” now seemed a fitting one for U.S. actions. Indeed, that long, cruel war — treated quickly and superficially in the history books — gave rise to an Anti-Imperialist League.

Reading outside the classroom, I began to fit the pieces of history into a larger mosaic. What at first had seemed like a purely passive foreign policy in the decade leading up to the First World War now appeared as a succession of violent interventions.

When the war in Korea began in 1950, I was still studying history as a graduate student at Columbia. Nothing in my classes prepared me to understand American policy in Asia. But it seemed clear to me then that it was not the invasion of South Korea by the North that prompted U.S. intervention, but the desire of the United States to have a firm foothold on the continent of Asia, especially now that the Communists were in power in China.

Given the history of the United States, given its obsession with Middle Eastern oil dating from Franklin Roosevelt’s 1945 deal with King Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia, and the CIA’s overthrow of the democratic Mossadeq government in Iran in 1953, it is not hard to decide that question.

The ruthless attacks of September 11th (as the official 9/11 Commission acknowledged) derived from fierce hatred of U.S. expansion in the Middle East and elsewhere. Even before that event, the Defense Department acknowledged the existence of more than 700 American military bases outside of the United States. Since that date, with the initiation of a “war on terrorism,” many more bases have been established or expanded.
